When you’re in Japanese toy industory you tend to see a lot of weird or funny things that sometimes you just have to shake your head at . This hopefully weekly post will be on some of those weird or funny things that we see in Japan. The first post will be on a present we got at Bandai when they announced the release of there new Robot Series. I’ve put a report on the blog about this announcement so if you haven’t seen it click on the link provided. (http://www.over-drive-inc.com/overdrive-blog/info/704.html) Well anyway the session is over we’ve taken all the pictures we wanted and on our way out everyone is handed a large bag that contains something. This is one of the largest toy companys in the world mind you and they’re not handing out things just for the heck of it. We leave the building and look inside the bag and guess what’s inside? Giant Senbei with the words “Robot Damasi” burned onto it!! For those of you unaware of what a senbei is think of it as a cracker made out of rice. (For more details click here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senbei) For a idea of how large this thing really is we’ll put a few items next to it to compare it to . First up is a average senbei followed by a can of coke and finally our good friend the Revoltech VF-1S last seen during the GN-U review .
Just take a look at that!! It’s more twice the size of that VF-1S and it’s perfectly eatable!! Give credit to Bandai they know how to leave a lasting inpression. No way anyone who got this is forgetting about Robot Damasi (Robot Spirit) anytime soon. You have to wonder though how much Bandai spent to have some poor guy burn these letters on it. Where’s the eating part were I struggle through the whole thing? Sadly though I know I should be eating it as part of this post it’s still sitting on my desk waiting for the day I get crazy enough to eat it . We’ll be back next week with a report on the Megaman E Drink that’s just out this week in Japan. I’ll be drinking this one for sure.
Here we are with Dog Bonnie the newest from the Yamato Tandem Twin Animal Girls line. It is a PVC version of a Resin kit that was originally sold at hobby events. Please note this is a item that was lent to us by Yamato for a review on our Japanese website. It is has already been released and may not be available at the present. The sexy oufit Brenda is wearing is called a “devil’s food cake” style outfit. The color and design of the character herself is based on a golden retriever. Why is it posed the way it is ? We’ll answer that question later. Lets take a closer look at some of the details of the figure. All the metal parts are made from real metal. The small parts that were in the box included extra face and chest parts, glasses and a eyemask that can be used to put her in a really submissive position. The last large post on the Wonderfest will be split into two parts one focusing on the Kaiju section of the Wonderfest while the second part will be on the weird stuff that are always there. Kaiju Section There is always a large group of people at Wonderfest with booths featuring Kaiju and monster stuff. The old style Godzila, which is called Showa Godzila in Japan, still has a huge following overhere which accounts for the many new old style Godzila items that are still being released constantly. There are even a few small companies that specialize in the making of the old style Soft Vinyl Kaiju figures. A post will be done later for the booth of the guy who made that huge Godzila hand puppet that was seen at ou booth at AX in July. Let’s take a look at what everyone brought to the show. Not only is there Godzila items there a bunch of stuff from the old Tokusatu series as well. The next section is the fun part of the show the weird stuff you can always find at Wonderfest. Though you may find them hard to understand they usually sell fairly well and most sell out before noon. You’ll see a lot of original characters and strange looking monsters that some person may have dreamed up when they were?drunk. The figures that really caught my eye was these 3 Killer Yakuza Figures. The first one is called “Doboku Satujinken” meaning something like Construction Worker Killer Kenpo-Ka. The old man in the second picture is called “Fundoshi Ireba Cyborg” meaning G-string dentured cyborg. The third which was the most popular is the killer assasin nurse with all those knives held between her fingers. These crazy stuff were all sold out before noon. The rest of the pictures will have stuff like Samus from the Matroid TV game and Strider from the Strider Hiryu games as well as much much more funny and strange stuff. Personally I think this is the stuff that captures the spirit of the Wonderfest best which is to have fun and enjoy yourself. Anyways enjoy the pictures. This will be all for the Summer Wonderfest. I’ll have a small post on the Godzila hand puppet booth up soon but basiclly this will be it. Hope you liked the posts and the pictures. It’s been 2 weeks since Wonderfest and I still have things to post about it. Which means either I’ve been too busy or too lazy recently. Anyway with C3 Hobby just around the corner I’ll be getting everything left up as soon as possible so don’t forget to check our site this week. This post will cover the bishojo stuff that was shown at the Wonderfest. Nowdays bishojo items consists of around 60 to 70% of all the items that are being sold. You may wonder why it’s that high. The reason is simple mecha doesn’t sell very well now and even if the someone wants to make a mecha unless he’s willing to lose money he is almost forced to make bishojo figures. The popular characters at this summer’s Wonderfest was almost the same as the winter Wonderfest that was held in Febuary. It featured a lot of Hatune Miku , Gurren Lagann’s Yoko and Ikki Tousen. There hasn’t been any really trendy characters that has exploded on the scene so far this year so for new stuff there weren’t anything eye catching. Hope you enjoyed the photo’s. Heres comes a ton of photos of mecha related items that where seen at the summer Wonderfest on Augest 4, 2008. There will be a lot of the Super Robot stuff as well as a some of the hard core stuff. For those who are wondering the king of robots, at least in Japan, Gundam doesn’t grant licenses to amature molders at Wonderfest for various reasons so you will never see a Gundam kit here. Anyway take a look and enjoy yourself. Some of the really good guys at these places are recruited by conpanys and start making sculpes for them. That how good some of these guys are.
